What a pleasant surprise this day was! I was hoping for a couple of high based supercells in western Kansas and certainly got much more than I hoped for! Several supercells developed from southwest Nebraska southward along a boundary in western Kansas. Caryn and I intercepted a tornadic storm just south of Gove that produced hail almost golfball sized as well as at least 2, possibly 3 tornadoes. Click on a photo below for a larger image. Enjoy!!!
Looking south as we headed to Gove, KS.
Nice classic backwards "c" shaped rotating updraft, complete with a funnel cloud.
Tornado! Brief touchdown south of Gove!!
Goofy looking thing here but it had several needle funnels that formed and a couple briefly made contact with the ground. The lowering was spinning wildly!
Near Pendennis, KS looking north at the pretty structured supercell.
Wow, enough daylight to capture the gorgeous structure of this intensifying supercell!
Getting better structured by the minute!
Light fades, but still provides ample structure shots!
Wall cloud and occlusion very visible. Looked like it was ready to drop another more significant tornado.
My favorite shot as intercloud lightning provided an illuminated scene with the setting sun casting blue and green hues on the updraft. Gorgeous!
Still spinning hard just west of Utica!
When I see something like this, I think TORNADO! Look at the RFD erosion and clear slot! WOW! And to think it is July 31st!
Storm draws ever closer, loaded with large hail. Still looks potentially tornadic!
Caryn and another spotter saw this tornado. I was able to catch the very end of it as it roped out. Another tornado occurred a few minutes later that I could not film.
