Winter Storms
Eastern Colorado was victim to back to back intense blizzards within 10 days of each other, making December a top 5 snowiest on record!
DECEMBER 29/30, 2006 BLIZZARD:
I made it to the Limon and far eastern Colorado areas for this blizzard. Southeast Colorado was pummeled with up to 44" of snow and 18 feet drifts! Many farm animals perished and even two weeks later, many roads were still not cleared. Buildings in some of the small towns were declared unsafe as the snow on rooftops stressed structures! You can check out the video here: DEC 29 EASTERN COLORADO BLIZZARD (16 MB)
Typical scene with drifts to the roof of the barn in this country farm scape.
Almost a perfect whiteout, but you can barely see Most rural roads were impassible with blowing snow
DECEMBER 19/20, 2006 BLIZZARD:
Once in awhile a winter storm deserves the spotlight. The intense blizzard that hit Colorado December 20/21, 2006 was one such storm. Dumping as much as 54" of snow and creating drifts to 14 feet, this blizzard was a ranked #6 ALL TIME for the Denver metro area. At my house southeast of town, we had about 30" of snow, 8 foot drifts and winds gusting to 60 mph! This storm was a long duration event with snow falling at a rate of 1-2" per hour for nearly 24 hours straight! Check out the pics below and also the video here: DEC 20, 2006 COLORADO BLIZZARD (8 MB)
6-8 feet of snow plowed through my subdivision. This is an 8 foot fence, but the dogs are only 2 feet from
the top already and the storm isn't over yet!
Nobody was going to get out of their driveways! 6-10 feet snow drifted over this person's driveway!
